The Lawyer’s Daily speaks with Toronto lawyer Angela Chaisson about Bill C-5, An Act to amend the Judges Act and the Criminal Code to mandate sexual assault law training for Canadian judges.
The Bill, if passed, will require federally-appointed judges in Superior Courts to participate in training on matters related to sexual assault law and social context (providing fair and respectful treatment for people of all backgrounds).
Angela regularly works on sexual assault, harassment and revenge porn cases. She gives her opinion that sexual assault law training for judges would go a long way in assisting judges who must grapple with the difficult issues involved in sexual assault litigation.
Such training would also, according to Angela, increase access to justice by decreasing the number of appeals in sexual assault cases, where the law is often misapplied.
